5 Things to Look for When Searching for Homes in Inglewood

10/4/22  |  Jason Lowery

To know if an Inglewood home is right for you, look at the neighborhood, floor plan, and these other things.

Looking for a new house can be daunting, but this doesn’t have to be true when searching for homes in Inglewood. Homebuyers are in luck when starting their home search in this California city; more homes are available in the area compared to last year. This and other factors indicate a shift in the dominating seller’s market.

Most properties for sale in Inglewood are single-family houses, although there are a fair share of multi-family houses, condos, and townhomes available for your particular needs. Here’s everything you should look for when searching for homes in Inglewood.

1. Location

The first aspect to consider when searching for homes in Inglewood is the location. Location is one of the only things you can’t change about a property, which is why it’s important to research the area before you buy. Think through what you want the location to offer you or your family, such as a short commute to work, good entertainment and restaurant options, or access to public transportation.

If you have a family, you should research the nearby school districts that serve your specific neighborhood in Inglewood. The city has several highly-rated elementary, middle, and high school options, making it a great place to raise a family. Beyond schooling, there are several activities for children and adults alike in the area, such as the Carl E Nielsen Youth Park and around-the-clock spots to eat.

2. Neighborhood

The next step in your home search is to check out the neighborhood. When you find a home you like, visit it at different times of the day and the week to understand the natural energy of the area. Chances are the neighborhood is different on a late Sunday morning than it is during Wednesday rush hour. If you spot a person in their front yard while looking around the block, ask them a few questions about what it’s like living in the area.

There are ten neighborhoods in Inglewood, some of which include Morningside Park, Fairview Heights, and Inglewood Knolls. Research each neighborhood to see if you want to live somewhere more commercial, artsy, or away from the city center. Keep in mind that, as a city, the noise level in Inglewood does affect the surrounding homes. Also, pay attention to aspects like homeowners associations and amenities. Make sure you’re ready and willing to follow the extra regulations and fees of a community with an HOA.

3. Home layout

What you need from a home’s layout depends on your own wants and needs. First, consider how and where it’s situated in the neighborhood. Does it provide a good view, or is it blocked by a neighboring property? Do west-facing windows make a living room unbearable to be in during sunset, or is a north-facing room not letting in enough light?

Also, think about the outdoor spaces in the home you’re looking for. Plan for if you want a large backyard for children or pets or a covered back porch to spend afternoons on. Think about the front yard: Is it easy to maintain, or is it designed in a way that looks pleasing while also being functional? Although some of these factors can be changed once you buy the home, it’s always a bonus when a home comes how you want it.

4. Home floor plan

Next, think about the floor plan when searching for homes in Inglewood. Consider how small or large you need a house to be and where you want the rooms to be situated. For example, if you have children, think about if you want their rooms close to the primary bedroom or on the other side of the house. If you work from home, consider rooms you can convert into a home office. If your home is the go-to place to host parties, make sure the kitchen and common areas are big enough for large groups of people.

Consider where you’ll be putting belongings that you need but don’t use daily. Look out for closet and storage spaces, and if they seem like large enough areas to hang all of your clothes, keep your cleaning supplies, and store recreational equipment or seasonal decor. This goes for pieces of furniture too. If you have a wooden bed frame or a dining room table to bring to your new home, make sure it will fit in the room you plan on placing it in.

5. State of the home

Depending on how old or new the property you’re looking at is, keep an eye out for any negative indications about the state of the home. Usually, before finalizing a sale, a buyer orders a home inspection on the house, although there are some things you can look for that can help you make an early decision. For example, if a set of wooden stairs are looking worn or the exterior is chipping away, then repairs will likely need to be done to the property.

Other things to look out for are where the electrical sockets in the home are, if they seem up-to-date, and any plumbing or water damage. Look at ceilings and walls for discoloration or dilapidation, and pay attention to musty smells. Although these issues don’t have to be deal breakers, it is good to know about them before investing in a home.
